About Denise

Denise Rosemary Nicholson is an internationally recognised specialist librarian in copyright, scholarly communication and open access. She has a BA degree and Higher Diploma in Library and Information Science from the University of South Africa (UNISA) and a Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.  She also passed two WIPO/UNISA Modules – “Essential Copyright Law (with distinction) and “Internet Aspects of Copyright and Trademarks” (with distinction).  She has 41 years’ experience in library and information services, 27 years of which were specialist experience in copyright, scholarly communication and open access.   See her CV, publications list, awards and testimonials below.

    • 2001 – Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) Academic Librarian Award.
    • 2002 – WIPOUT International Copyright Essay Competition winner.
    • 2009 – Alumnus of the Year Award – University of South Africa, Department of Information Science.
    • 2010 – LIASA Gauteng South Branch Librarian of the Year Award.
    • 2010 – National LIASA Librarian of the Year Award.
    • 2014 – Invited to become a member of Golden Key International Honour Society.
    • 2014 – University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, Library Star Award.
    • 2015 – Wits Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Citizenship Award (Individual).
    • 2017 – LIASA Certificate for Service and Recognition.
    • 2021 – SALI Trust and LIASA Lifetime Achievement Award
    • 2021 – UNISA Chancellor’s Calabash Award for Outstanding Educator Award
