About Denise

I am Denise Rosemary Nicholson, a specialist librarian in copyright and scholarly communication. I have a BA degree and Higher Diploma in Library and Information Science from the University of South Africa (UNISA) and a Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.  I also passed two WIPO/UNISA Modules – “Essential Copyright Law (with distinction) and “Internet Aspects of Copyright and Trademarks” (with distinction).  I have 48 years’ working experience, including 38 years’ experience in library and information services, of which 24 years were specialist experience in copyright, open access, and scholarly communication.

  • 2001 – Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) Academic Librarian Award.
  • 2002 – WIPOUT International Copyright Essay Competition winner.
  • 2009 – Alumnus of the Year Award – University of South Africa, Department of Information Science.
  • 2010 – LIASA Gauteng South Branch Librarian of the Year Award.
  • 2010 – National LIASA Librarian of the Year Award.
  • 2014 – Invited to become a member of Golden Key International Honour Society.
  • 2014 – University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, Library Star Award.
  • 2015 – Wits Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Citizenship Award (Individual).
  • 2017 – LIASA Certificate for Service and Recognition.
